Choosing A Netbook

Netbooks or Mini-notebook are rapidly becoming a global sensation because of its low-cost and lightweight capability.

Having your own personal computer (PC) is considered a luxury of the past. And PC makers are on its toes to create something that would cater to the growing needs of their consumer.

In the last couple of years, manufacturers was able to strip down a lot of the bells and whistles that come with standard laptops. The goal -- to design a light version that fits most peoples' hands and budget. Giving a new definition of today's household standard in PC computing. Despite their size, these mini-machines have processors with adequate power, substantial memory and storage, can handle basic software, media playback, and internet-anywhere that most people need.

Distinguishing features of a mini-laptop:

1. Typical cost ranges from P15,000 - P25,000. The amount is comparable to a desktop but what you pay is portability. Having a normal-sized laptop is an expensive luxury; but if majority of your needs involve going online, writing, and maybe a bit of spreadsheets, then a netbook is your middle-ground. It is small by nature but with well rounded features.

2. Screen size is about 7-11 inches wide but decent enough if you plan to watch streaming movies. Notebook LCD displays 14 to 17 inches. Prolonged usage may cause eye-strain but it can be eluded with infrequent breaks.

3. Supports major operating systems like Windows XP/Vista/7, MAC OS X, and Linux – which is cheaper than with Windows pre-installed. The Linux code targets mainly advanced users and enthusiasts. Translation: Veer away if you're not into open-source programming. Computer newbies should stick with Windows OS.

4. Software for the most basic needs like creating documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reading email, listening to music, watching videos, instant messaging, video chatting, and browsing the web.

5. It has around 1-2 GB of memory and around 250 GB of storage space-- plenty of room for your mp3's and collection of pictures. A word of advice though, if you plan to upgrade these components, RAM and HDD, you should study how they are located. If it has compartment doors underneath the casing and can be opened by a screwdriver, then you're in luck. Replacement of such involves a 3-step process. Unscrew door, add in the memory or replace the hard drive, Screw back the door. Even a non-technical person can do this under ten minutes. A cheap method you can do yourself after the warranty expires.

6. Additional peripherals can be supplemented via memory cards and flash drive.

7. Low battery consumption; less impact on the environment.

8. Multiple internet connectivity via LAN, Wi-Fi and some have Bluetooth options. Major malls now offer free internet, a major factor to consider buying one.

Keep in mind though that keyboard size is reduced than a standard laptop, the casing is not as rigid but manufacturers may have improvements by now, the flexibility of upgrading is complex on other models, not all softwares are supported--like the memory-hogging Photoshop.

Most of the people who is considering buying a netbook can't expect much from a mini-monster. As long as you can watch a movie, listen to your favorite tunes, and hop on the web without a glitch, then it's adequate enough for the average Joe.
